Oldest, largest maximum-security prison in Canada established in 1835. Designated a national historic site in 1990. Imposing limestone walls with multiple guard towers. Rear wall backs onto Lake Ontario. Features two rotundas with double staircases, one older with stone walls, other with red gates. Security control rooms. Cell blocks with various types of cells, including 2 tier ranges and segregation units. Psychiatric facility, hospital wing, school, workshop building, recreation yard, access tunnels. Correctional Service of Canada Museum located across the street.
